Edward James ‘Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was a noted English poet, and had been the Poet Laureate of Great Britain from 1984 till his death.
এডওয়ার্ড জেমস্ টেড হিউজ (১৯৩০-১৯৯৮) ছিলেন একজন বিখ্যাত ইংরেজ কবি এবং ১৯৮৪ সাল থেকে তার মৃত্যু পর্যন্ত তিনি ছিলেন ইংল্যান্ডের সভাকবি।
His famous works include Birthday Letters, The Hawk in the Rain and Tales from Ovid.
তার বিখ্যাত লেখাগুলির মধ্যে ‘বার্থডে লেটারস্’, ‘দ্য হক ইন দ্য রেইন’ এবং ‘টেলস্ ফ্রম ওভিড’ অন্যতম।
The poem describes the magical experience of a young child in an oakwood, and indicates that human beings and trees should thrive as a single family.
কবিতাটি বর্ণনা করে ওক গাছের এক জঙ্গলে কবির অত্যাশ্চর্য অভিজ্ঞতার, এবং নির্দেশ করে যে মানুষ এবং গাছপালার একই পরিবারের সদস্যদের মতোই বেড়ে ওঠা উচিত।
It focuses strongly on the need to protect our natural environment for the welfare of mankind.
কবিতাটি তীব্রভাবে আলোকপাত করে মানবজাতির কল্যাণে প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশকে সুরক্ষিত করা কতটা প্রয়োজনীয় তার ওপর।
Read the following:
Once I crept in an oakwood-I was looking for a stag.
একবার নিঃশব্দে এক ওকগাছের বনে গেছিলাম — খোঁজ করছিলাম এক পুরুষ হরিণের।
I met an old woman there-all knobbly stick and rag.
সেখানে এক বৃদ্ধ মহিলার সাথে হল আমার দেখা — গাঁটওয়ালা লাঠি হাতে ও ছেড়া কাপড় পরা।
She said: ‘I have your secret here inside my little bag!
তিনি বললেন, ‘আমার এই ছোটো থলির মধ্যে তোমার গোপন তথ্য আছে।’
Then she began to cackle and I began to quake.
তারপর শুরু করলেন তার খ্যাক খ্যাক করে হাসা এবং আমি কাঁপতে লাগলাম।
She opened up her little bag and I came twice awake
তিনি তার ছোট্ট থলিটি খুললেন আর আমি যেন আরও সচকিত হয়ে উঠলাম —
Surrounded by a staring tribe and me tied to a stake.

They said: ‘We are the oak-trees and your own true family.

আমাদের কাটা হয়, উপড়ে ফেলা হয়, তোমরা চোখের পলকও ফেল না।
Unless you make a promise now-now you are going to die!
এখনই যদি না একটা শপথ নাও — এখন তোমার মৃত্যু নিশ্চিত।
‘Whenever you see an oak-tree felled, swear now you will plant two.
‘যখনই দেখবে একটি ওক গাছ কেটে ফেলা হয়েছে, শপথ করো তুমি দুটো লাগাবে।
Unless you swear the black oak bark will wrinkle over you
যদি তুমি शपथ না করো এই ওক গাছের কালো ছাল তোমার ওপর ভাজ ফেলবে
And root you among the oaks where you were born but never grew.’
এবং তুমি এই ওক গাছগুলির ভিতরে আটকে থাকবে, যেখানে তোমার জন্ম হয়েছিল, কিন্তু আর বৃদ্ধি হয়নি।”
This was my dream beneath the boughs, the dream that altered me.
এই স্বপ্নই আমি দেখেছিলাম গাছের তলায়, যে স্বপ্ন আমাকে বদলে দিয়েছিল।
When I came out of the oakwood, back to human company,
যখন আমি ওক গাছের বন থেকে বেরিয়ে, মানুষের সংস্পর্শে আবার ফিরে এলাম,
My walk was the walk of a human child, but my heart was a tree.
আমার হাটা ছিল মানুষের সন্তানের মতো কিন্তু আমার হৃদয়টা হয়ে গিয়েছিল একটি গাছের!

Ans: The poet came twice awake when the old woman opened up her little bag.
কবি দ্বিতীয়বার জেগে উঠেছিলেন যখন বৃদ্ধ মহিলাটি তার ছোট্ট থলিটি খুলেছিলেন।
(b) What would happen to the poet if he failed to make the promise?
Ans: If the poet failed to make the promise, he would die. The black oak bark would wrinkle over him and root him among the oaks.
কবি যদি প্রতিশ্রুতি দিতে ব্যর্থ হতেন, তাহলে তার মৃত্যু হত। কালো ওক ছাল তার উপর কুঞ্চিত হয়ে যেত এবং তাকে ওক গাছের মধ্যে শিকড় আটকে দিত।
(c) What was it that altered the poet?
Ans: The dream that the poet had beneath the boughs of the oakwood, where he met his ‘own true family’ (the oak trees), was what altered him.
ওকবনের ডালপালার নিচে কবির যে স্বপ্ন ছিল, যেখানে তিনি তার ‘নিজের সত্যিকারের পরিবারের’ (ওক গাছ) সাথে встреিত হয়েছিলেন, তাই তাকে বদলে দিয়েছিল।

5. Do as directed:
(a) Ranjan said, “Who does not know the name of Rabindranath?” (Change into affirmative sentence)
Ans: Ranjan said, “Everybody knows the name of Rabindranath.”
(b) Sangeeta runs faster than any other girl in her class. (Rewrite using the positive degree of ‘faster’)
Ans: No other girl in the class runs as fast as Sangeeta.
(c) Kaushiki blamed her friend for the trouble. (Rewrite using the noun form of ‘blamed’)
Ans: Kaushiki put the blame on her friend for the trouble.

7. Your school is going to host the Inter-school District Sports Competition. Suppose you are the Secretary of the Sports Club of your school. Write a notice (within 100 words) calling students to participate in the competition. Mention the time, date and venue of the competition. Your notice should be countersigned by the Headmistress/Headmaster of your school.
