Jane Hyatt Yolen (Born in 1939) is an American author and editor of folklore, fantasy, science fiction, and children’s books.

She has written over 280 books, the best known of which are The Holocaust Novella and The Devil’s Arithmetic.

The present text is an edited version of her popular short story of the same name.

Let’s Read :-
There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea.
একবার এক ছেলে ছিল যে নাবিক হতে চেয়েছিল কিন্তু তাঁর মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দিতেন না।
“Child, what do you know of sailing?” she would say.
“বাছা, তুমি জলপথে ভ্রমণ করা সম্পর্কে কী জানো?” তিনি বলতেন।
“You’re a farmer’s son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea.”
“তুমি একজন কৃষকের ছেলে, তুমি ঋতুগুলির পরিবর্তন সম্পর্কে জান এবং মাটির গন্ধ জান তবে তুমি সমুদ্র সম্পর্কে জান না।”

Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother.
এখন যে ছেলেটির নাম জোন ছিল সে সবসময় তার মায়ের কথা মেনে চলত।
So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.
তাই সে ভারী মন নিয়ে তার খামারের কাজে গিয়েছিল কিন্তু সমুদ্রের কথা আর বলে নি।

One day, he had been walking behind the plough.
একদিন সে লাঙলের পিছনে পিছনে হাঁটছিল।
He all but ran over a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt.
সে প্রায় ময়লার ঢেলার উপর একটি ছোট সবুজ কচ্ছপের উপর চাপা দিয়ে ফেলেছিল।
He picked the turtle up and set it on his head where he knew it would be safe.

When he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head.

To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed.

Jon bowed back but said nothing.

Although his heart yearned to go out to the sea, he did not express his wish.

The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, “I see you wish to go sailing”.

“Since you put me on your head like a hat to keep me safe, I shall give you a different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire.
“যেহেতু তুমি আমাকে সুরক্ষিত রাখতে একটা টুপির মতো তোমার মাথার উপর রেখেছিলে, আমি তোমাকে তার পরিবর্তে একটা অন্য ধরণের টুপি দেব, যেটি নাবিকদের সর্বাধিক আকাঙ্ক্ষিত।
A cap full of wind.
একটি টুপি বাতাসে পূর্ণ।
But there’s one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off.”

Then with a blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving a striped cap behind.

Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother.

The very next day, putting on the sailor’s cap, he ran off to the sea.

Thus began his first ever sea voyage!

Well, the wind cap worked as the fairy had said but that one condition prevailed!
ঠিক আছে, পরী যেমনটি বলেছিল উইন্ড ক্যাপটি তেমনই কাজ করেছিল তবে সেখানে একটি শর্ত ছিল!
Now that was both bad and good.
এখন ওটি খারাপ এবং ভাল উভয় ছিল।
It was bad because Jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at bedtime.

Since it was wind that sailors called for, and wind that Jon could supply he soon became very popular.

For a year and a day, young Jon did not set foot on land.

Complete the following sentences with information from the text:

Answer the following questions:
(a) Why did the fairyman offer Jon the wind-cap?
Ans: The fairyman offered Jon the wind-cap as a reward for saving his life (by placing him safely on his head).

(b) What was the condition that was associated with the wind cap?
Ans: The condition was that no human hand would ever be able to take the cap off Jon’s head.

“Oh, let me go ashore just for one day,” he begged the captain when they had sighted land.

He promised he would return but the captain was unmoved.

However, Jon could not stop dreaming of the land.

But the winds called up by the cap spun the ship three times around.

As Jon went under the waves, the cap came off his head.

Ans:
Once I went to Puri with my parents. My parents were sleeping in the hotel after lunch. So I went to the sea beach alone. I saw an empty boat there and sat on it. Suddenly the boat started to sail. I noticed that the boat was not anchored. I was both excited and afraid at that time. After sometime the boat came at the middle of the sea. Suddenly the sky was being covered with black clouds and a storm came. Big waves were rising all over my boat. Then I saw a big ship near me and was rescued by it.
একবার আমি আমার বাবা-মায়ের সাথে পুরীতে গিয়েছিলাম। আমার বাবা-মা দুপুরের খাবারের পরে হোটেলে ঘুমোচ্ছিলেন। তাই আমি একা সমুদ্র সৈকতে গেলাম। আমি সেখানে একটি খালি নৌকা দেখলাম এবং তার উপর বসে পড়লাম। হঠাৎ নৌকাটি sailing শুরু করল। আমি লক্ষ্য করলাম নৌকাটি anchored করা নেই। আমি সেই সময় উত্তেজিত এবং ভয় অনুভব করছিলাম। কিছুক্ষণ পরে নৌকাটি সমুদ্রের মাঝখানে চলে এল। হঠাৎ আকাশ কালো মেঘে ঢেকে গেল এবং একটি ঝড় উঠল। আমার নৌকার চারপাশে বড় বড় ঢেউ উঠছিল। তারপর আমি আমার কাছেই একটি বড় জাহাজ দেখতে পেলাম এবং এটি দ্বারা উদ্ধার পেলাম।

Suppose you had wished to perform on stage for a long time. On the occasion of your school’s annual function, you finally got a chance to do so. Write a letter to your friend describing how you felt when your wish was fulfilled.
